Young European Truck Driver 2010: Italian final focused on cargo securing

Italy's Young European Truck Driver national final.During the Italian final of the Young European Truck Driver contest, competitors once again showcased their professionalism and excellent performance skills.

It was windy and hot at Italscania’s Trento premises during Italy’s recent Young European Truck Driver national final. The competition was held during an open house, and it coincided with the local launch of Scania’s new V8 range.

Supported by the Red Cross, tyre manufacturer Michelin and the traffic police, the event was exciting and interesting to follow. Cargo securing, for example, was first-class. The competition highlighted Driver Training, Driver Support, Fleet Management and driver care. It was challenging for the drivers, and the crew did an excellent summing up with each contestant afterwards.  “This is good, because it puts the focus on something less prioritised in the transport business,” said Christian Levin, Managing Director of Italscania.

The final one-on-one manoeuvring kept the audience in suspense to the very end. The worthy winner was Gerhard Thaler, who will be moving on to the European final in October as the Italian King of the Road.

All drivers showed themselves to be good ambassadors for the profession, and they will surely contribute to safer roads and an improved environment. For example, some of the drivers went back to the track the day after to measure and analyse their mistakes from the competition – now, that’s dedication!
