Osvaldo Cruz, a small city in the Brazilian state of São Paulo, has one of the largest fleets of articulated trucks in the region. Among its residents is Roberto César Octaviani, winner of Scania’s second MMCB (Best Truck Driver in Brazil) competition in 2007–2008. A professional driver for 20 years, Octaviani won the semi-final in Ribeirão Preto and then the title at the final at Scania Production São Bernardo do Campo.
The 2007 competition was Octaviani’s second try. “I competed in 2005 and performed well, but overconfidence cost me,” he says. “In 2007, using my previous experience, I carried out the tests with more care and attention, and this time I managed to win.”
Scania rewarded the winners of the regional heats, which took place in 12 cities across eight Brazilian states, with driver training. “Investment in training is fundamental in reducing road accidents,” says Octaviani. “In addition, a well-trained professional provides benefits to his company, such as reduced fuel consumption, lower tyre wear and less need for maintenance.”
As national champion, Octaviani won numerous prizes, including electronic equipment, furniture, household goods and a trip to Scania’s production units in Södertälje. Following the competition, Octaviani purchased a Scania 4-series truck, which he drives today for the Trans Zaneti company. “When I go to a fuel station or dealer, people often recognise me,” he says.
In 2010, Scania will stage its third driver competition. “Once entries open for the third competition, I will be there to try to become a double champion,” Octaviani promises.
