Scania fleet management helps operators keep costs firmly in check. The service includes a data logging unit on-board the vehicle and communication with the office. The operator gets a comprehensive overview of how the fleet is running, which in turn contributes to lower fuel costs and helps motivate drivers. From 2009, digital tachograph data can be downloaded as well. The service, which includes GPS positioning, is fully compatible with a mixed fleet of vehicles.

Long dashboard with Scania Colour Plus instrument cluster

Rising fuel prices, increased environmental awareness and tougher demands on driver skills make it necessary for transport operators to have access to more information in order to optimise operations and boost profitability. Scania’s customer commitment therefore goes one step further.

The new service allows operators to interpret and analyse vehicle and driver data in a transparent way. Since it is equally useful on a mixed fleet of vehicles, this will help any operator to keep down costs, increase revenues and facilitate environmentally adapted driving.

The service provides a clear and simple overview of the fuel consumption and performance of individual vehicles, as well as tracking and information on how each vehicle has been driven – information that can be used to help improve profitability and reduce environmental impact. Included in the service is a logging and communication unit on-board the vehicle (Scania Communicator), a communication subscription and a web-based office interface.

Data collector and portal

Scania Communicator collects data from the vehicle. On the office portal, the data is analysed against parameters set by the customer and then reported in an easy-to-understand manner, highlighting where action can be taken. Individual vehicles and drivers can be studied, as well as groups of vehicles or the whole fleet.

The information is useful from a cost and environment perspective in terms of fuel consumption and vehicle performance. The information can then be used as an effective tool when training drivers in fuel-efficient and environmentally suitable driving, which in turn impacts maintenance costs as well as road safety.

The portal also offers other operational efficiency management tools, including vehicle tracking and exception reporting, maintenance planning and environmental reporting to name just a few.

Digital tacho data

During 2009 a new functionality will be introduced on the Scania Communicator that allows wireless downloading of driver card as well as digital tachograph data to a secure storage location where it can be viewed and analysed. This will require the use of next generation digital tachographs due for release from the tachograph suppliers during 2009.

On-board support

Scania offers several on-board solutions that support the driver’s work and facilitate interaction with the office.

The Scania Interactor range of on-board computers also supports data collection and analysis and is available in two sizes: Scania Interactor 300 and 500 with 7-inch and 10-inch touch screens.

The Scania Interactor 500 is an open Windows-based platform that permits free installation of third-party software, whereas the 300 is intended for pre-installed software. Both allow for the same functionality with Scania fleet management software and now include truck-adapted navigation for Germany, UK, France and Benelux as standard.

Scania Driver Log and Scania Order Support are services designed for simple integration into administration and order handling systems at the office.

Various national fleet management packages are available from Scania distributors.

Drivers and fuel account for more than half of costs for a typical truck operator. Scania puts every conceivable effort into optimising fuel economy and uptime. This has a huge impact on the customer’s business and capacity to earn money.

Drivers and fuel account for more than half of costs for a typical truck operator. Scania puts every conceivable effort into optimising fuel economy and uptime. This has a huge impact on the customer’s business and capacity to earn money.

Scania’s aim is to develop vehicles that lead the market in terms of total operating cost and trouble-free ownership. This is based on a business model that takes the customer’s cost and earning potential into account.

Scania vehicles are designed to perform as much useful work as possible on the roads and to spend as little time as possible in the workshop. They are also renowned for their fuel economy, a reputation that has been earned during more than a century in the commercial vehicle business. In addition, they are designed to appeal to drivers in terms of performance, response and ergonomics, factors that help operators recruit and keep good drivers. This concern for the customer’s business has given Scania vehicles outstanding residual value in the market – another factor that contributes strongly to the customer’s bottom line.

Here are some realistic steps to optimise fuel performance that are available to most operators. The figures cannot be added, but they give an indication of the effect of individual actions.

Scania Driver Training

Driver training saves around 10%

Fuel savings of 10% on average are possible as a result of professional driver training. Active monitoring of driver performance and regular training are needed to maintain this level.

4 km/h saves up to 3%

A simple measure like lowering the normal highway cruising speed by 4 km/h will save up to 3% of fuel and a huge pile of euros.

Electronic support saves up to 10%

Automated gearchanging makes driving easier and helps drivers perform consistently, while reducing wear and tear on the vehicle. Scania Opticruise has been found to save up to 10% of fuel for an untrained driver.

Scania Ecocruise, the smart cruising software, can save 3-5% on top of that by using techniques well-known to any driver trained in eco-driving and with negligible time loss in a working day. Not accelerating when climbing a hill until the crest levels out and using momentum at the bottom of slopes are two of the secrets.

Scania has also developed acceleration control, a system that promotes smooth driving and boosts passenger comfort in city buses. It also reduces wear and tear on brakes and powertrain and typically saves up to 6% of fuel. Will also save fuel for some city distribution applications.

Vehicle optimisation

Continuous monitoring of vehicle and driver performance makes it possible to take action with minimum delay.

Regular maintenance takes on a crucial role to make sure everything stays in optimum shape – faults can be detected before they have a chance to cause much harm.

Get the gearing right for the application. At 40 tonnes with today’s high-torque engines, going for economy gearing, i.e. cruising below 1200 r/min instead of 1350 r/min, will save up to 3% of fuel without any severe effects on driveability.

Keeping down the unladen weight will automatically save fuel. Specifying low-weight options could reduce weight by 500 kg and save up to 1.5% in hilly terrain.

Checking axle alignment pays off. Adjusting a 1° misalignment may save up to 3% of fuel.

Optimising air drag saves 5-6%

Fitting air deflectors is the first obvious step to improve air drag on a tractor unit. This alone saves some 10%. But further refinements are possible:

Adjusting the roof air deflector from 10 cm too high or low will save up to 3% of fuel.

Fitting Scania’s rubber extensions on the side air deflectors and sideskirts will save up to 1.5%.

Avoiding auxiliary lights, air horns and other embellishments on the roof will save up to 1.5%.

And then all sorts of improvements are possible on the semitrailer, of course. A difference of 5% in fuel consumption between semitrailers is not uncommon.

Tyre pressures 1-2% per bar

One bar too little in the tyres may cost 1-2% of fuel. Keeping up the tyre pressure at all times will secure consistent rolling resistance, minimum tyre wear and maximum road safety. An easy way is to specify tyre pressure monitoring (TPM), a system that allows pressures to be read from the cab and that alerts the driver if the pressure drops in any of the tyres. In addition, around 5% of fuel can be saved by specifying tyres with low rolling resistance.

How much fuel do you want to save?

So saving fuel – and reducing the environmental impact – is an important part of the game. It all boils down to these crucial factors:

The driver can provide the biggest short-term fuel savings.

Vehicle optimisation is vital in the long term.

Follow-up and monitoring are essential to secure consistent fuel performance.

For a typical 40-tonne European combination running 200,000 km annually, the fuel savings can be translated into litres and euros ():

Fuel saving

Saving in litres

Saving in euro 1)

1) For convenience, the diesel price in this comparison is set at 1 euro per litre

Scania salesmen are trained to help customers find the right solutions in any of these areas and more. Sometimes it takes some convincing to break old habits and go for new and better solutions.

Scania has a particularly broad bus and coach offer to cater for different customer needs in different markets, from low-floor city buses to the most exclusive luxury coaches. Full aftermarket support is provided via the Scania service network.

Scania OmniCity: full low-floor 2-axle or 3-axle articulated city bus

Scania OmniLink: low-entrance 2- or 3-axle single bus or 3-axle articulated city, suburban or interurban bus

Scania OmniExpress: 2- or 3-axle intercity or tourist coach, two heights for intercity or coach use

Scania Irizar i4: 2- or 3-axle intercity or tourist coach, three floor layouts for regular rural, intercity or coach use

Scania Irizar Century: 2- or 3-axle tourist coach

Scania Irizar PB: 2- or 3-axle luxury coach

Particular attention has been paid to the driver environment, which is based on Scania’s new driver station. Driver appeal is second-to-none and many studies have highlighted the importance for safety of good interaction between driver and vehicle.

Scania Irizar Century

Scania Irizar range

Powertrains with EGR for maximum convenience

Scania’s bus engines are all equipped with Scania EGR, exhaust gas recirculation, requiring no aftertreatment equipment or additives on-board the vehicle. All engines up to 360 hp are available as EEV (enhanced environmentally friendly vehicle). Engines that meet Euro 5 emission standards extend up to 480 hp.

The new 9-litre 360 hp EEV engine for the intercity and coach segments provides a lightweight alternative for 2-axle coaches and 2- and 3-axle intercity buses.

Torque delivery and driveability are outstanding for all engines in the new range, minimising the need for gearchanges and providing a relaxed ride. The new bus range is also available with Euro 4 and Euro 3 engines.

Gearbox options include manual gearboxes with Scania Comfort Shift, an electronic gearshift servo, as standard. Automated gearchanging, Scania Opticruise, is optional, as well as fully automatic ZF transmissions.

Unique renewable fuel solution

Scania also offers operators the unique possibility of specifying a diesel engine adapted to run on ethanol in city buses. The technology is highly efficient, since combustion takes place according to the diesel principle, and has been proven in 20 years of busy city traffic in the Swedish capital of Stockholm, for example.

This renewable fuel cuts CO2 emissions by up to 90% if produced in a sustainable way from Brazilian sugar cane. Being a liquid fuel, distribution and handling are exceptionally simple and production of ethanol is booming all over the world.

The diesel-ethanol engine is a 270 hp 9-litre unit with 1200 Nm of torque.

New articulated bus

Scania now offers two types of articulated buses. The Scania OmniCity, which has been sold for more than a decade, is now complemented by a low-entrance OmniLink. The two types are also available as assembly kits supplied to selected bodybuilders.

The new low-entrance articulated bus, which is intended for intercity traffic involving long-distance and BRT systems, has a higher floor from the second axle and rearwards, a layout that provides numerous benefits:

Greater passenger capacity. No intruding wheel housings in the higher rear section.

Greater comfort with a maximum number of seats, all facing forward, but less room for standees.

Disabled passengers or passengers with prams have easy access to the low-floor area via the 1st and 2nd doors.

Simpler mechanicals and better fuel economy with the longitudinal powertrain.

The version with a full-length low floor is intended for inner-city applications requiring a fast flow of passengers.

The new low-entrance articulated bus is available with the 310 hp 9-litre Euro 4 engine.

Adjustable VDV dashboard

Linked to the VDV instrument cluster is a dashboard for urban buses conforming to the VDV recommendation 234. The recommendation has attracted a considerable following among public transport companies and trade unions in Germany and Spain, for instance. The purpose is to provide a type of standard workplace for bus drivers where they readily feel at home and know the whereabouts of all vital controls.

Scania has integrated the VDV recommendations into Scania’s new driver station, maintaining the ergonomics while adding the features required. The result is stylish and very driver-friendly. Much appreciated features like the generous steering wheel adjustment for tilt and reach, and pendant pedals are naturally retained. The entire dashboard is also adjustable for reach, moving with the steering wheel when adjusted.

Acceleration control

Passenger comfort and safety are of primary importance to a city bus operator. So is fuel economy and, closely related to that, environmental impact.

Scania is now introducing acceleration control as an option, designed to smooth out the ride when the bus is less than fully laden, eliminating the jerking associated with busy city traffic. This function has been developed at the request of several city bus operators.

The function controls acceleration electronically, taking into account the actual weight of the bus at any time. The preset acceleration value of 4 km/h/s from standstill tails off gradually to 2 km/h/s at 90 km/h.

At speeds above 30 km/h the driver can temporarily override the system using kickdown, for example for overtaking.

The settings of the acceleration control can be adjusted by Scania service workshops to suit individual conditions.

The fuel saving potential is up to 6% in typically busy stop-and-go city traffic. Additional savings result from reduced wear and tear on the powertrain and brakes, as well as from the enhanced well-being and comfort of the occupants.

TPM promotes safety and economy

Tyre pressure monitoring (TPM) is being introduced as an option for all buses. The system alerts the driver if the pressure in any single tyre drops below the preset value, providing invaluable backup for visual checks should something untoward happen. At the same time, the system saves fuel by making it easier for drivers and operators to maintain correct tyre pressures, signalling even the slightest deviation via the central instrument.

Safety features on Scania buses and coaches also include electronically controlled disc brakes all-round, hill-hold for easy uphill starting, emergency braking assistance providing extra braking power in case of panic braking and electronic stability program to minimise the risk of skidding and rollovers.

Faster gearing – more relaxed cruising

A faster 2.73:1 rear axle is now available, enabling a coach to cruise around 1400 r/min at 100 km/h with a standard direct-drive gearbox. The ratios available are 3.42, 3.07, 2.92 and 2.73.

The ultimate in cruising comfort is obtained with the overdrive 12-speed gearbox, available on luxury coaches. Revs are then below 1200 r/min, enabling Scania’s high-torque engines to make the most out of every drop of fuel.

F-series – a long and proud tradition living on

For many years Scania has been able to provide a full-size front-engined bus chassis ex-factory, as opposed to truck chassis that are re-built for bus service post-delivery.

Front-engined buses are preferred for use on poor roads off-highway due to their robustness and easy servicing. The concept has found particular favour in South America and southern Africa, but there is also interest from other regions.

The Scania F-series traditionally has an exceptionally robust chassis frame with extra ground clearance.

The latest F-series features the same components, electrical system and features as the latest bus and truck series, including the new driver station and CAN-bus based electrics.

The first version out is a right-hand-drive heavy-duty 4×2 with 9-litre 230 or 270 hp engine and a horizontal 6-speed manual gearbox to keep down the floor level. This combination provides ample performance and excellent fuel economy for this type of operation.

Scania Fleet Management

Scania’s fleet management solutions are designed to help drivers and operators achieve the highest possible efficiency from their vehicle fleet, while also allowing smooth interaction with the office and other on-board equipment and systems.

Scania’s data logging and communication service has been developed to provide a powerful tool for detailed monitoring and follow-up of fleet operations. The transport operator gets a complete package that provides an overview of how the fleet of vehicles is used, which in turn contributes to lower fuel costs and more perceptive and motivated drivers. The system is fully compatible with a mixed fleet of vehicles.

The service includes an on-board data logging unit, GPS positioning and communication with the office. Data can be read and analysed on the office portal or via an on-board computer, if fitted.

On-board computers are available in two sizes: Scania Interactor 300 and 500 with 7-inch and 10-inch touch screens. The Scania Interactor 500 is an open Windows-based platform that permits free installation of third-party software, whereas the 300 is intended for pre-installed software.

Scania’s policy is always to provide comprehensive service support for its customers along with vehicles. Scania’s service portfolio now comprises some 30 different services – some with a long tradition, some quite new, some available in most markets, some based on local initiatives and best practice that are spreading to other markets. The standard of Scania’s services is upheld via a set of promises that secure full commitment towards customers.

“Scania’s service offer is designed to enable our customers to concentrate on their core business, while we ensure the best possible care for their vehicles and drivers – that’s what we mean by one-stop shopping!” says Urban Erdtman, Group Vice President Sales and Services Management. “Scania is continuously investing in the geographical coverage and technical competence of its sales and service network. Wherever they are, our customers shall be able to turn to dedicated professionals to keep their transport business in top shape.”

The range of services and the packaging differs between markets, but their modularity makes for compatibility across borders.

Driver training

Driver training and driver information have a long tradition at Scania – 20 years or more in mature markets. The objective is to familiarise drivers with all the important product features and support them to get the best out of their vehicles.

Scania Driver Training

Driver training typically results in a fuel saving of 10% on average initially, and with regular training this level can be maintained over time.

Some 5500 drivers in Europe attended Scania driver training during 2007. Courses are adapted to local conditions and in many cases form part of national training schemes for professional drivers. In some countries, Scania joins with truck safety experts in organising dedicated safe driving courses, for example in Germany.

Legally required driver training

Important recent additions are courses for truck and bus drivers designed to conform to the EU directive on driver training, thus enabling drivers to update their Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC). The directive applies to bus drivers from 10 September 2008 and to truck drivers from 10 September 2009.

These courses are already established and highly appreciated in EU markets, having been available for some time to truck as well as bus drivers.

Scania’s long-standing efforts to promote driver competence and boost driver status have grown into a global affair. Scania driver competitions are held on five continents with close to 50,000 participants. In 2009 the next round of Young European Truck Driver will be held all over the European continent. Some countries are also running special events for bus and coach drivers.

Financing and insurance

Demand is growing rapidly in this sector and these products are much appreciated in emerging markets as well. Financing is currently offered in 34 countries in Europe and the solutions include financing, leasing, hire-purchase and insurance. Scania’s experts are fully familiar with the truck and bus business. Hence customer needs are assessed on an individual basis taking into account financial and operational stability, reputation and relationships with Scania.

Scania Rental

Long- and short-term schemes are included in Scania’s rental portfolio. The composition of the rental fleets varies depending on market conditions, but in most cases includes international and regional tractor units and rigids with box bodies.

In Germany and Austria Scania is pioneering a system of long- and short-term rental semitrailers to be able to provide customers with complete tractor-semitrailer combinations.

Scania Assistance

Various roadside assistance schemes have been in operation in mature markets for at least 25 years and since the early 1990s on a closely coordinated international level. Scania drivers in distress have access to free-of-charge round-the-clock support in their own language if required, as well as prompt roadside assistance from Scania’s closely-knit local service network. The average time to get the vehicle back on the road has dropped from 10.5 hours in 1999 to 6 hours today.

Scania Assistance

Workshop services

Scania has one of the tightest-knit and most proficient service networks in the business. Around 1000 workshops are spread out to cover all parts of the European continent, and some 500 additional workshops cover the rest of the world.

The network is continually upgraded and extended to cover new markets and regions where Scania customers operate. Workshop standards are maintained and improved via a set of promises that provide a commitment from Scania towards its customers. These promises include staff training, which is much facilitated by Scania’s modular product system.

Scania dealership, service workshop

Workshop services are of course tightly linked to the roadside assistance and parts activities to provide seamless support and maximum uptime. In many countries distributors also undertake specialised services to provide one-stop shopping for maximum convenience, taking care of trailer and bodywork, air conditioning, glass repairs and tachographs, for example.

The workshops are also outlets for Scania Oil (see below), Scania Accessories and Service Exchange parts, and in many cases frequently employed parts for bodywork and trailers.

Via the workshops customers also have access to Scania Truck Gear, a range of garments designed for male and female professional drivers.

Scania Oil

Following more than 10 years of testing of 150 different oil qualities in customer vehicles, Scania is now introducing a range of lubrication oils that have been specially developed for Scania vehicles, optimised to provide minimum wear and minimum deposits – and hence maximum uptime.

Scania Oil

The range comprises three grades of engine oil (Scania Oil E7 for normal operation and LDF and LDF2 for tougher conditions), two grades of gearbox oil (normal and high performance) and three grades of rear axle oil (two with different viscosities for normal operation and one for extra high demands). The oils are supplied in 5-litre canisters, and for workshop in 208-litre drums or 1000-litre containers.

Learn more about Scania oil here

Repair and maintenance contracts

Depending on local conditions and customer requirements, Scania distributors offer various types of repair and maintenance contracts, covering the chassis, the complete vehicle or the complete vehicle combination.

Used trucks and buses

The international Scania network co-operates in the supply of used vehicles to the market. Particularly useful is the Internet service via Scania’s national homepages that provides ready access to a thousand or so vehicles and trailers on offer. Detailed search options help narrow down the choice. The technical data included make it easier to select the most suitable vehicle for each purpose.

Scania has also introduced special repair and maintenance schemes devised to cost-effectively maintain ‘long-serving friends’, i.e. vehicles that are 4-5 years or older.

The service is fully compatible with a mixed fleet of vehicles.

The service includes an on-board data logging unit, GPS positioning and communication with the office. Vehicle data as well as digital tachograph data (from 2009) can be read and analysed on the office portal or via an on-board computer, if fitted.

On-board computers are available in two sizes: Scania Interactor 300 and 500 with 7-inch and 10-inch touch screens. The Scania Interactor 500 is an open Windows-based platform that permits free installation of third-party software, whereas the 300 is intended for pre-installed software. Both allow for the same functionality with Scania fleet management software.

Scania Driver Log and Scania Order Support are services designed for simple integration into administration and order handling systems at the office.

Various national fleet management packages are available from Scania distributors.

Scania’s new inline engine platform meets Euro 5 emission standards without aftertreatment, marking a breakthrough in engine technology. Scania is continuing to extend this new engine range to include all truck series as well as buses and coaches. Additional engines cover the need for Euro 5 and EEV, as well as giving customers a choice of EGR and SCR technology for some truck applications.

Pioneering technology in new engine platform

Scania’s new inline engine platform pioneers several new technologies. A new common-rail injection system, Scania XPI, reduces particulates with its extra-high injection pressures. Common-rail also allows fine-tuning of combustion with multiple injections. Scania EGR exhaust gas recirculation lowers the combustion temperature to reduce NOx emissions, on some engines with a patented two-stage cooling circuit. A variable-geometry turbocharger supplies precisely the right amount of EGR to the intake side. All this is controlled by Scania’s own engine management system.

The new 5- and 6-cylinder inline engines span outputs from 230 hp and 1050 Nm, to 480 hp and 2500 Nm. High torque ratings provide exceptional driveability and enable highly economical overall gearing at low cruising revs. The engines are now being introduced in all Scania truck series – P, G and R – and throughout the Scania bus and coach range.

Since the introduction around one year ago, some 2,500 trucks and buses with the new engine platform have so far been delivered to customers in selected countries.

Euro 5 and EEV (enhanced environmentally friendly vehicles)

Euro 5 becomes mandatory for all new vehicles from October 2009. However, growing environmental concern has made authorities and operators look for solutions yielding the lowest possible emissions. Until the rules for Euro 6 are finalised and manufacturers have had time to develop corresponding products, this demand is being met by EEV standards. There is thus an appreciable market for EEV in buses and also for certain truck applications.

Scania 13-litre 6-cylinder Euro 5 engine

Scania is responding to this demand by providing EEV as well as Euro 5 versions of its 230, 280 and 320 hp 9-litre engines for trucks as well as buses. A new 360 hp EEV version caters for the needs of the fast-growing intercity bus and coach segment.

Scania 360/400/440/480 hp 13-litre Euro 5 engine

An EEV version of the 420 hp truck engine covers the need for the lowest possible emissions, for example in some construction, haulage and special-purpose applications, while enabling operators to prove their environmental commitment and in some cases benefit from incentives.

Choice of technology

EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) is used exclusively on buses, whereas truck operators in the medium-output range have a choice of EGR and SCR (selective catalytic reduction). The high-output V8 engines use SCR technology. (Euro 4 and Euro 3 engines are also available for some markets.)

Launch control helps starting and reduces clutch wear

Scania has introduced a new standard function that improves performance when pulling away from a standstill, in particular in conditions of high driving resistance, e.g. starting uphill or heavily laden. The desired engine revs are maintained without the need to depress the accelerator further during clutch slip-in. Clutch wear will be reduced since the slip-in time is shorter in most cases. Greater precision in controlling engine revs with the accelerator when the gearbox is in neutral or when declutching.

Chassis

New lighter 2-spring rear air suspension

New crossmembers, lighter frame and suspension components

Saves up to 120 kg compared to earlier 2-spring design

Gradually being introduced on tractors and rigids

4-spring option remains for extra weight saving, added comfort and convenient load handling

EBS in combination with drum brakes

Available on 4×2 with air suspension

Mainly for construction applications

Better brake response

Better functionality for interaction with other systems, e.g. retarder, brake blending, ESP

Gearboxes

Manual gearboxes – power take-off options

New side-mounted gearbox PTO

New rear-mounted dual-flange and high-speed PTOs

Automatic gearboxes

Automatic neutral when coming to a standstill, e.g. at traffic lights

Hill-hold

Speed limiter (30 km/h) and R (reverse) disabled with packer step occupied (refuse collection trucks)
