Customisation king Sven-Erik “Svempa” Bergendahl continues to attract attention around the world with his restyled trucks featuring distinctive paintwork, chromium and aluminium décor.

<img class="size-large wp-image-2569" src="http://www.scanianewsroom.com/files/2011/02/minitruck_4-web-425x307.jpg" alt="The Blue Shark. A limited edition (2008) Scania R 620 with bodywork in 4 mm thick aluminium. Even the steps for the cab are made of aluminium.

Vrooom! Sven-Erik “Svempa” Bergendahl turns the key and starts up his sweetheart, a bright red open cab version of a bonneted Scania T-model, tuned to deliver 1,000 horsepower. The rumbling of its V8 engine fills the Svempas workshop and he breaks into a big smile.

“There’s nothing better than Scania trucks. They leave the competition behind in the dust,” says truck styling legend Svempa Bergendahl.

At age 71, Svempa − an international legend in truck styling − has no plans to slow down. He has been in this business for more than 40 years. Scania became his favourite at an early stage.

“There’s nothing better than Scania trucks. With their powerful engines, attractive design and high quality through and through, they leave the competition behind in the dust.”

On behalf of Scania, Svempa is also producing limited edition series of restyled trucks. His latest creation, Black Amber, stands in the workshop awaiting final inspection. Its dark brown metallic paintwork shines intensely.
Svempa’s chief stylist Jan Richter has continuous discussions on styling proposals and prototypes with Kristofer Hansén, head of Styling at Scania.

“With these trucks, we are enhancing Scania’s optimal styling. We are pushing the envelope, but never doing damage to the original,” Richter says.

Svempa describes himself as a control freak, especially when it comes to interior details and lighting.

Since the limited edition workshop began ten years ago, nearly 500 Svempas-styled trucks have found new homes all over Europe. The greatest interest is found in Italy.

“They love V8s and trendy styling. The more it shines and glows, the better,” Svempa says.

And customers spontaneously show their appreciation when their trucks are delivered. Svempa’s most vivid memory is from 2008 in Trento, where one customer wept uncontrollably with joy when he received his Blue Shark.

A limited edition Scania V8 (2009), Dark Diamond is a true eye-catcher with special detailing all over the vehicle, including the interior.

Suddenly a “vrooom” is audible from his jacket pocket. His mobile phone is ringing − so the rumbling of a V8 engine can be heard wherever Svempa goes.

There seems to be no risk that the workshop will run out of ideas. Jan Richter’s sketch book is full of more or less imaginative creations. The next customisation project, he explains, is like nothing they have done before. The project is known by its working title of Chimera and has now moved from styling proposals to computer-aided design (CAD) drawings.

“We are designing a unique low-weight tubular frame chassis, made of stainless steel. And a multi-stage turbo system based on the latest 16.4 litre engine.”

Over the years, Svempa and his team has received a lot of feedback from their customers − information that is highly valuable when working on new creations and for entering new markets. A newly awakened interest is apparent in Brazil, China and Thailand.

Although he has accomplished so much, there are still projects that Svempa dreams about.

“Imagine a beautiful summer day in the Stockholm archipelago, and an aluminium Combat Boat 90 with dual V8 engines painted in an eye-catching colour. That would beat most of what I’ve done.”

Black Amber by Svempas is a limited edition of 100 Scania V8 trucks for true fans of customisation.

The vehicles in the limited Black Amber by Svempas series are each signed by Sven-Erik Bergendahl, ‘Svempa’, and are individually numbered from 1 to 100.

Owning or driving a Scania V8 truck is not enough for many keen truck owners and drivers, who spend untiring devotion on personalising their vehicles. For some of these fans, Scania is producing another series of special V8-powered trucks, following up on the success of the limited edition “Dark Diamond” presented in 2009. Available with any of the Scania V8 outputs, the unique styling and added features have once again been developed in close collaboration with Svempas, the legendary Swedish styling and customising company.

Polished stainless steel exhaust tailpipe, bolted exhaust panel in metallic finish.

“One hundred Scania fans now get the chance to buy something very special, based on the new Scania V8 truck range,” says Kristofer Hansén, head of Styling at Scania. “With Svempa and his customising team, we have produced a design that stands out in any crowd. Whether from the outside or inside, there is no doubting the special care and attention that has gone into this limited series of trucks.”

The Black Amber paintwork in dark brown metallic is inspired by amber – the hard, translucent yellowish-brown fossil resin, of which black amber is a rare dark variety. The paintwork features chrome detailing and badges and matte or high-gloss black graphic accents visible from every angle.

Special high quality materials abound in the interior, including additional features that enhance comfort and a range of thoughtful touches. Numerous Scania V8 and Griffin symbols will please the enthusiasts.

Black perforated leather steering wheel with Black Amber inserts.

“Included in the deal, naturally, are traditional Scania V8 virtues like long-lasting performance, operating economy and durability,” Hansén says.

The vehicles in the limited Black Amber by Svempas series are each signed by Sven-Erik Bergendahl, ‘Svempa’, and are individually numbered from 1 to 100.

In European sports car racing, two of the engine world’s strongest brands are working together. Scania’s V8 trucks ensure that Lamborghini’s race cars are safely transported between the continent’s legendary tracks.

In European sports car racing, two of the engine world’s strongest brands are working together. Scania’s V8 trucks ensure that Lamborghini’s race cars are safely transported between the continent’s legendary tracks.

It is the Campionato Italiano di Gran Turismo, a classic Italian racing weekend at the Autodromo Vallelunga north of Rome. One of the high points is the season finale of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo, the fastest one-make racing series in the world.

“Both Scania trucks and Lamborghini race cars have a lot of muscle and great personality,” says driver Roberto Farina from Logico transport company.

The paddock just outside the racetrack is bustling with activity. Two impressive Scania semitrailer rigs form the entrance to Super Trofeo Village, Lamborghini’s onsite hospitality venue, which exudes elegance and muscle. Technicians from Lamborghini and six private stables swarm around the race cars. Tonnes of tyres are being reloaded, and there is a long queue to the two-level parts-storage area inside one of the Scania rigs. Red wine, Parmesan cheese and prosciutto di Parma are laid out in the VIP tent. In a few hours, everything will be ready for guests and for practice sessions on the racetrack, where Ferrari, Audi, Porsche and Formula 3 stables have also been allotted time. Some 200 people travel with the Lamborghini racing team, ranging from race drivers to kitchen staff.

Although most Scania customers choose a V8 for more rational reasons nowadays, some are attracted by image and design. One example is the most exclusive manufacturer in the sports car world, Lamborghini, also known as the House of the Raging Bull.

Two Scania trucks form the entrance to the Super Trofeo Village, Lamborghini’s onsite hospitality venue for the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo.

“To us, Scania was the obvious choice,” says Douwe Hilarius, project manager of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo. “We can’t haul Lamborghini race cars in any regular rigs. The best-performing sports cars in the world should naturally be transported by the best-performing trucks. When it comes to image, Scania is the brand.”

The Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo tours between six of Europe’s best-known racetracks. The cars used in the competition are driven by both professional drivers and amateurs.

To arrange transport services between events, Lamborghini contacted Italscania, Scania’s distributor in Italy. The company wanted the most powerful and impressive-looking truck rigs possible. Inside the vehicles, it needed room for race cars, parts storage areas and generators, as well as office and conference spaces equipped with satellite TV systems.

Christian Ardizzoni and Guiseppe Artusi are two of the drivers who transport the Lamborghini semitrailers with its race cars and equipment.

The solution was the Scania R 620 Topline Platinum V8 with black and motif-painted semitrailers. Since Lamborghini has no transport licence, the operator Logico in Campogalliano, which delivers more ordinary Lamborghini cars to customers around Europe, was asked to handle the transport services. Loris Paganelli, managing director and owner of Logico, personally travels on the racing circuit to help out his most important customer.

“Lamborghini specified very detailed design and image requirements for the Scania V8s,” he says. “Next season they will use Scania trucks again, and the new 730 horsepower V8s are a natural fit.”

Giuseppe Artusi is one of Logico’s drivers, who transports the Lamborghini semitrailers with its race cars and spare parts between European race tracks.

“I get to drive the truck world’s equivalent of a Lamborghini − with power, technology and beauty all in one vehicle,” he says. “We drivers use Scania as the ultimate benchmark when we compare different truck makes.”

The other two Scania drivers, Roberto Farina and Christian Ardizzoni, are spending the weekend washing and moving race cars inside the Lamborghini village. They see additional similarities between the two vehicle makes on which their lives centre at the moment.

“Both Scania trucks and Lamborghini race cars have a lot of muscle and great personality,” Farina says.

Manfred Fitzgerald, Lamborghini’s brand and design director, has been working for a decade to build the company’s image. He believes the racing competition creates new ways of reaching both existing and new customers.

“It is important for a luxury make like Lamborghini to have a clear idea of how to build its brand,” Fitzgerald says. “It is my job to ensure that this task is moving in the right direction. Putting a few cars on a racetrack is not enough. Equally important is everything that surrounds the competition: how we behave, how we take care of our customers and how we transport our exclusive sports cars.”

7 facts about Lamborghini

Innovative powertrain technology

Improved productivity

Support tools for drivers and operators to optimise fuel economy

V8 truck range with unique identity

Construction trucks with greater mobility

New gas engines

Extended service offer, including minimised CO2 emissions

A new generation of 9.3-litre gas engines is the latest development on Scania’s new engine platform (9.3/12.7/16.4 litres). They are available in the Scania P-series trucks in a wide variety of cab and chassis configurations. Chassis-mounted composite tanks provide a capacity of 640 litres of gas. The 270 and 305 hp engines comply with the EEV emission standards. Biogas as well as natural gas can be used as fuel. See separate release on gas engines.

The new V8 truck range with its unique styling traits and numerous new options sets new standards in terms of performance and productivity, while building a strong image for its owners and drivers. Scania V8 trucks are renowned for offering ample performance, good fuel economy, high uptime and a long service life. Topping the line-up is the R 730 with a remarkable 3,500 Nm, 730 horsepower and stunning performance. This new 16.4-litre V8 engine is part of Scania’s new common-rail engine platform with several innovative solutions that pave the way for technologies to be used for Euro 6 emission standards. The 500, 560 and 620 hp V8 engines are based on the 15.6-litre platform.

The new R-series brings highly appreciated technological innovations, combined with gains in productivity, comfort and style. Technological enhancements include the new, much appreciated automated gearchanging system, Scania Opticruise. Scania Driver Support provides on-board assistance for drivers eager to hone their driving skills to perfection, while squeezing the most out of every drop of fuel. New interior fittings take fit and finish to a new level and the innovative pull-out bed offers up to 900 mm of luxury accommodation. Many of these new items are available on the P- and G-series as well.

These and other technical improvements, along with the new creature comforts that enhance driver appeal, all serve to support the driver and promote more efficient driving.

Fuel economy being one of Scania’s strongholds, no effort is saved to get the most out of every drop of fuel. This is fundamental in the development of new products, in the sales process when specifying new vehicles, in the training of drivers and in the operational support provided for operators throughout the service life of their vehicles – all to ensure maximum lifetime profitability.

New Fleet Management products provide monitoring and analysis tools for vehicle and driver performance, as well as an environmental report, making it easy for operators to continuously keep track of how the business is developing. Three support levels are available, ranging from email reports on vehicle performance to full fleet control via a portal. Several add-on services can be chosen to suit the needs and preferences of each individual operator. See separate release on driver and operator support.

Most Scania trucks are sold with a customised service package that has been worked out together with the customer to find the most profitable solution with the best possible operating economy for each individual transport application.

The latest concept is Ecolution by Scania, which strives to minimise the CO2 impact of every type of transport by optimising the vehicle specification, monitoring performance and providing feedback to operators and drivers. See separate release.

Elements of the Ecolution by Scania offer are also available separately, for example Maintenance+, which is a maintenance programme adapted to preserve the vehicle’s CO2 and fuel efficiency over time.

In line with its strategy of continuous improvement, Scania keeps developing its products all the time. A new Scania truck built today is even better than one built yesterday. Below is an overview of the recent and upcoming innovations, grouped by market segment:

With a torque level of 3,500 Nm and 730 horsepower, Scania’s new V8 is the most powerful truck engine in the world − built to meet the toughest emission standards and handle the most demanding tasks. Given its power, the new engine will also enable hauliers to meet the future need for higher transport capacity – longer and heavier trucks − thereby providing benefits for the environment and the climate.
Meanwhile Scania’s entire V8 truck range has received both exterior and interior upgrades in order to emphasise and amplify the special V8 sensation that is receiving praise from drivers and hauliers worldwide.

High torque at low engine revs

All Scania V8 engines meet Euro 5 standards and the most powerful also meets the stricter EEV standard, without compromising performance.

In addition to the new 730 hp engine, Scania’s V8 platform consists of engines with output steps of 500, 560 and 620 hp. All four engines are based on Scania’s philosophy of high torque from low revs, making the engines fuel-efficient across a broad rev range.

The International Truck of the Year award is given each year to the truck model that has made the strongest contribution towards making road transport more efficient. The award, which was established in 1977, is the most prestigious accolade in the trucking world. The jury consists of leading commercial vehicle journalists from 22 European countries.

Scania’s new R-series, which was unveiled in September 2009, has been very well received in the industry. In addition to the International Truck of the Year 2010 title, for example, the Scania R 480 model won by a wide point margin in the extensive comparative 1000 Point Test organised by the German commercial vehicle trade press, whose results were recently published in several European trade magazines.

Scania's new R-series range of trucks has been selected as the International Truck of the Year 2010, the most prestigious distinction in the European truck industry.

New Scania R-series, Truck of the Year 2010!

Scania’s new R-series range of trucks has been selected as the International Truck of the Year 2010, the most prestigious distinction in the European truck industry. The jury’s statement cites the aerodynamic design of the R-series, operational economy and the unique support system that spurs the driver to adopt more efficient driving habits.

“Continuous improvement is one of Scania’s strategic cornerstones, which also pervades our product development work. The fact that the new R-series is being awarded the International Truck of the Year trophy confirms the success of our ambition that every innovation launched by Scania shall contribute to greater productivity, lower operating costs and enhanced driver comfort,” says Scania’s President and CEO Leif Östling.

“The statement of the jury matches the positive reactions we are now getting from customers. The timing for the new R-series is spot-on,” concludes Mr Östling.

Jury chairman Gianenrico Griffini comments that “During this extremely challenging time for the entire automotive industry, and especially for Europe’s commercial vehicle manufacturers, Scania has delivered a ‘state-of-the-art’ truck that sets new standards in terms of fuel economy, driveability and overall efficiency.”

The International Truck of the Year 2010 award will be presented to Scania in December this year. The award is given to the truck model that has made the strongest contribution towards making road transport more efficient during the past 12 months. The statement of the jury, which consists of leading commercial vehicle journalists from 22 European countries, includes the following:

“Building on the success of the outgoing range – elected Truck of the Year in 2005 – the new R Series impressed the ITOY jury not least due to its continued evolution.

“In particular, the latest model features a more aerodynamic cab profile that not only reduces fuel consumption but also improves the flow of air through the engine compartment, thereby aiding engine cooling–a factor that will be especially important for the forthcoming, next generation of lower-emission ‘Euro-6’ diesels. Scania’s revised Opticruise automated gear-shifting system, launched on the new R Series, was also rated highly for its faster, smoother and more intelligent shift strategy.

Visit the New Scania R-series website!

“The ITOY judges further praised the Swedish manufacturer’s new Driver Support System (developed on the R Series) which was seen by the majority of the jury as an innovative learning tool capable of providing a continuous and pro-active assessment of a driver out on the road, rating their fuel consumption, driving efficiency and overall ‘road craft’ with a simple yet effective ‘star’ rating system which encourages a driver to excel. Last but not least the R Series’ highly-attractive new interior impressed the ITOY jury with its latest dashboard, high level of comfort and ergonomics.”

“Scania Driver Support encourages all truck drivers to improve their driving,” says Claes Åkerlund, the man in charge of Scania’s global driver training. And an improved driving style saves fuel.

Hauliers have to keep down rising fuel costs at the same time that they maximise efficiency and maintain safety. Driving style is crucial in achieving this, accounting for as much as 40 percent of a haulier’s costs. Well-trained drivers can help the company save large sums by using a gentler, safer driving style while also reducing the vehicle’s environmental impact.

Scania Driver Support is a useful support to drivers who are trying to achieve a more economical driving style. The system continuously analyses data from various sensors on the vehicle to monitor the driver’s performance.

“Scania Driver Support encourages all drivers to improve their driving,” says Claes Åkerlund, the man in charge of Scania’s global driver training. “The best results are achieved if use of the system is combined with thorough driver training. Then drivers will more easily embrace the advice they get and will find it easier to maintain their improved driving style.”

During a road trip, Scania Driver Support serves as a computerised personal coach that evaluates events along the road and provides suggestions for improvements in the following areas: hill-driving, brake usage, anticipation, and choice of gears.

After each trip, Scania Driver Support can provide a summary of a driver’s techniques as well as advice on training needs.
